In an attempt to gain more control over the living room, Sony has announced its launch of a cloud based TV service in limited markets. Playstation Vue will allow users to watch TV without cable or satellite service, directly on their Playstation 3 or Playstation 4 gaming console. Initially available in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia at a cost of as low $49.99 a month with no up front fees or long term commitments or contracts The channel lineup will include channel lineups from providers such as CBS, Fox, AMC Networks, NBC Universal, Discovery, Viacom, and Turner Broadcasting channels, among others. Cloud based DVR service will allow users to record and playback shows at any time without taking up space on their Playstation 3 or 4 device's hard drive.
The basic Playstation Vue package costs $49.99/month and includes the most common broadcast networks like CBS, FOX, and NBC as well as more than 45 of the most popular channels such as Discovery Channel , FX, Fox News Channel, USA Network, Food Network, TNT, Nickelodeon and AMC. The next level package costs $59.99 per month and includes all the channels in the Access package, plus local regional sports networks such as YES Network in New York, Comcast SportsNet Chicago, and Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, as well as additional sports and movie networks. The highest level package is $69.99 a month and includes the additional 25 lifestyle, music and family channels.
This is a revolution in TV viewing, as never before have users been able to simply stream TV channels over their internet connection without subscribing to real TV cable, satellite, FIOS or IPTV service from a satellite, cable, or phone company. It will be interesting to watch how it plays out and when and if they roll it out to additional locations. For now the top three metro areas will get service but you cannot subscribe if you live outside of them, it would be a very good service if it did not have these restrictions so I can't wait to see how they expand the service in the future.
